The Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians is an organization representing nearly 60 Tribes from six northwestern states. At it’s recent meeting in Spokane, ATNI President, Ernest Stensgar, discusses issues of primary importance to Indian people of the region.

“Tribal Leaders Congress on Education”
The Colville Tribe hosts a gathering of state and Tribal educators to sign a “memorandum of agreement” to implement Washington State House Bill 1495, titled; Encouraging Tribal history to be included in the common school curriculum.

“Super Fly Filmmaking Experience”
Native youth learn the tricks of the movie business during the Super Fly Filmmaking Experience. They receive a little help with the script from noted author Sherman Alexie. Upon completion, their movies are screened at the Seattle International Film Festival.

“Celebration 2006”
Every two years, as many as five thousand Alaska Natives gather in Juneau, Alaska to celebrate their culture with song, dance, artwork and competition. The Sealaska Heritage Institute’s ‘Celebration 2006’ is a powerful statement that Native culture is alive and well.

NWIN takes us to the Tulalip Tribe’s First Salmon Ceremony, to the Spokane Tribe’s ‘Airway Heights’ development project, to the Council of B.C. Chiefs summit, to Native American Day at Dry Creek Elementary School in Port Angeles, Washington and to the Colville Tribe’s Sunflower Festival.
